Silence is Sexy is a band originated from Utrecht, a city in the centre of The Netherlands.
The band is made of Pim on the guitar, Hendrik-Jan as the singer, keyboard player Frank (at the beginning in The Gathering), Barry bass, and Bart on drums. They have met six years ago. They have accepted to give us this interview.

Who are the artists who have influenced you ?
A lot of artists. We all listen to lots of different kinds of music.

Did you plan some concerts in Europe and when ?
At the moment we are touring in The Netherlans with a Dutch band called Moke. We would love to play in other European countries, but it's difficult for an independent band like us to arrange a tour.

How do you work on your music and words ?
Our song always start out with a musical idea, a Melody or a guitar part.
Then we mold that into an early song and arrangement using Garageband on our computer. Most times we write the words during that process. Then, we start playing the song in our rehearsalspace. Sometimes we change a lot playing the song together, sometimes the song is already good enough.

Your video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0MVz3kXAj8) is of a very good quality in terms of sound and video editing. Who are the people you work with : designers, painters, movie makers...
This video was recorded and edited by a Dutch national radio show called « 3voor12 ». They also filmed it for internet. But we also do a lot of things ourselves. For example: our bassplayer Barry is an excellent designer.
For our photograpy we work with Heidi de Gier (http://www.heididegier.nl). And we are always open to work with people that have good ideas.

Your music is available on most sharing platforms, why do you share ?
We are an independent band without a label behind us that is going to spend lots of money marketing our music. Sharing our music is our way of marketing. Besides that we like the idea. As we stated at the release of our last album: "Music is just like love. You have to share it".

Two of us are on Last.FM, you can take a look at our profiles to see what music we play.

Did you have contacts from majors ?
No.

Do you think that it is possible to live from its arts ?
Maybe someday. We all have dayjobs at the moment.

How can the community help you ? What do you desire ?
We don't desire anything, but people can help us out by sharing our music with as many people as possible. They are welcome to a live show if we play in thier area. And they can buy a CD or T-shirt or make a donation if they like.

What are the sites where we can some of your news ?
Our website http://www.silenceissexy.nl will take anyone to all the places where they can find our stuff.

Who is the The Royal Republican Orchestra ?
We met them using our computer. They are an orchestra. The recordings were great! An unbelievable experience.

It sounds strange Royal Republican Orchestra of Cuba, doesn't it ?
You are right: Royal Republican sounds strange. So it's up to you to draw your conclusion.

How did you make these new "arrangements " ?
A very talented friend of ours called Sander Zwiep did the arrangements. He's the guy on the cover of the EP.

"This ain't hollywood" looks like a professionnal album. Can you tell us more about the recordings ?
It's our second album. We wanted it to sound more poppy than our first album. We think that worked out pretty well. It's recorded in the Mailmen studio in our hometown Utrecht.

How this album is born ? Where the idea came from ?
We wanted it to really be an album instead of just a collection of songs. So we chose to use the film-theme as a methaphor for things you expierience in life.
You know they say you see your life as a movie if you have a serious accident, just before the crash ?
That's an interesting thought : is it a Hollywood movie with an happy ending or rather an experimental arthouse-movie?

When is your next album available on the net ?
We are working on our next album at the moment. We recorded some drums last week. But we are going to take our time to make this a very special album again.
